How I Know My Day Is Wildly Successful

Consider this a blueprint and a checklist.

  • Mindful Physical Cultivation. (30min minimum) For me, this takes the form of running, a kettlebell routine, yoga, martial arts, hiking, skiing, mountain climbing, foam rolling, or practicing handstands.  It could also mean trying something new.
  • Reading Non-Fiction and Taking Notes. (1 hour)  I’m currently reading Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman by Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia) and I Will Teach You To Be Rich by Ramit Sethi.  I’m amazed how the simple act of writing down an inspiring quote now and again seems to etch an entire book into my brain.
  • Meditation and Journaling. (10-20 minutes)  This is often a highlight of my day.  It makes me feel clear and on purpose.  Reflection through the form of writing seems to access a higher and more intelligent part of the brain, or at least that’s how it feels.  Additionally, cultivating gratitude and honoring what is ordinary (think play, food, laughter, etc) are high impact practices.
  • Read Epic Stories. (30 minutes, generally in the evening)  This is a tricky one because I find it easy to become lost in books to the point where I’m almost more interested in the story than what’s happening in my real life.  I try to follow the rule “everything in moderation including moderation.”  Because sometimes you just have to take a day to disappear into a story.  I just finished A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book One and am on to Catch-22.
  • Loving Someone. This shows up as: giving and receiving undivided attention, listening and being listened to, sharing a meal, sharing tea (hopefully at Samovar), giving/receiving affection, and having wild loud sex.
  • Making an Impact.  (1-4 hours) Doing work that changes the world.  That means doing whatever I’m doing to the best of my abilities, while figuring out ways to leverage my effort to make a bigger impact.  Leverage usually involves leadership.
  • Creating Something.  At least 1 thing.

How do you know your day is wildly successful?
